Today, our class travelled to Te Oro with Room 8 to celebrate Matariki through learning about tikanga Maori, raranga and art. It was a wonderful learning experience for all the students who attended. Room 7 have been to the workshops before and they had the chance to choose another workshop yesterday. We learnt about why Matariki is celebrated and how it is celebrated. We especially appreciated the korero given by the kaumatua and Whaea Lorna about tikanga Maori.
At the workshops, we learnt about raranga - weaving, Maori art patterns and symbols, plants, taonga and looking after the land because it looks after us. At the end of the workshops, we showed our work and shared how we made our art work.
It was a fun time enjoyed by all of us and a great way to celebrate Matariki.
