Year 8 Graduation 2021

It is the end of an era for our Year 8 students as they graduate from Glenbrae School and prepare to enter the various colleges they have enrolled in for 2022. We have had some fun times, challenging times and most of all memorable times at Glenbrae School.

For most of our Class of 2021, they have been at Glenbrae School since they were Year 1. For some, they joined later on in their primary school journey. Regardless, Glenbrae School is part of their educational history.

Congratulations to all the graduates of 2021. May 2022 be a successful year for you all as you start college. Remember the lessons you learnt while at Glenbrae school, treasure the memories and the friendships and bond you have made with your peers.

Here is a short movie which was shown at the graduation today to celebrate the memories of our Class of 2021.

End of year prize giving

What a wonderful day to celebrate the success of all our tamariki at Glenbrae School. We are so proud of all our class members who received awards today. We hope you will keep up the good work and persevere with your learning.

Although our parents and whanau could not be present to witness our prize giving, they were able to watch on the Facebook live. We would like to thank all our parents and whanau for supporting our learning this year. Room 7 has had a very busy year from our learning activities, fundraising, sport, trips, cultural activities, online learning during lockdown but our whanau have always been there to support us. We are grateful for you all.

To the teachers of Glenbrae school, our principal Mrs Patea, our teacher aides, office staff and everyone who has helped us along the way this year. Thank you very much.

With gratitude: Room 7 2021

Soane shares what he has been learning in technology with Mrs Sharma

Today, we learnt heaps about Invertebrates and Vertebrates. We learnt about the different habitats of many animals too. I loved today's session because animals are one of the basic things I used learn when I was little. At the end we had a fun Kahoot game to play as well. I place 3rd but I still had a phenomenal time.

Maths problem solving today

Today, we had a bit of fun solving this problem.

Mr Nath gave Mrs Tofa the alphabet saying each letter had a value. He told her she had to work out the value of each letter using two equations. He said:

A = 3

B = 12

C = 27

D = 48

E = 75

F =108

Here are some strategies some of our class members came up with:

A = 3  1.5  + 1.5     (=3)

B = 12 2.5 +2.5 (5)(=12)

C = 27

D = 48

E = 75

A = 3  (1X3) = 3 (x 2) = 3

B = 12 (2x2) = 4 (x3) = 12

C = 18

D = 48

E = 75

A = 3     3 - 2 = 1 + 2 = 3

B = 12   12 - 2 = 10 + 2 = 12

C = 27   27 - 2 = 25 + 2 = 27

D = 48   48 - 2 = 46 + 2 = 48

E = 75   75 - 2 = 73 + 2 = 75

F = 108 108 - 2 = 106 + 2 = 108

Here is a solution we agreed on at the end

A = 3 ( 1 x 1)= 1 x 3=3

B = 12 (2 x 2)= 4 x 3=12

C = 27 (3 x 3)= 9 x 3=27

D = 48 (4 x 4)=16 x 3= 48

E = 75 (5 x 5)=25 x 3= 75

F =108 (6 x 6)= 36 x 3= 108

or

The number of the letter in the alphabet sequence squared X 3 = value of the letter.

The class then had to work out the value of each letter of the alphabet and add the value of their names. It was quite fun to see the value of our names.

Fine's presentation about a special dish from Niue

 Fakalofa Atu and welcome to my blog. This week is a really special week because it is Niue Language week and for today's task we had to watch a video and write down how to make Takihi.

Takihi which is a well-known favoured dish back in the island of Niue. This Niue dish is kind of like a pudding in a main in one meal which only needs 3 ingredients that are Coconut cream, Taro and Pawpaw.

The way you make this dish is basically just layering thin pieces of Taro than Pawpaw on top of each other and once you get to the top you put coconut cream all over.

An interesting read in currents events discovered by Soane

 It was a normal day in England when all of sudden an unusual situation caught the eyes of big amount of people. On August the 27th , a bunch of animal rescuers and fire fighters encountered a unusual situation in the lands of England. A adorable hedgehog was found horribly trapped in a parking lot drain nearby the Seaford, East Sussex parking lot. A brave crew from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue service was called to help out in the scene of this poor hedgehog. A few minutes later of trying to rescue this animal it finally came out free. After getting out the poor thing they took it back to their community to check if it had any health issues. Once they took care off that they let it go free back to its ordinary wild life.

Character descriptions by Sione

Sione has expressed his understanding about the main characters of the Refugee book by Alan Gratz through these slides.  Leave him a comment if you are able to gain an understanding about the book through his character descriptions.

Short, powerful words, echo a lot of meaning

This is the start of Ali-Jon's poem about the situation Josef was in from our novel of study Refugee by Alan Gratz. He is still working on the rest of his poem but here is a taster of the masterpiece he is working on.

Refugee should care for each other

Unlike Hitler, the dude who didn’t bother

His attitude so bad

It made a lot of people sad

The Nazi’s didn’t care

Life became a roller coaster called the Stratofear

Financial literacy lesson with PWC tutors Kobe and Frank

Our Financial literacy tutors this year are Kobe and Frank. They both work for PWC and are auditors.

The lesson we learnt today focussed on making money, aiming to make more money and considering the risks. This was through a game where each team member had to throw a bean bag on an amount of money. The closest amount was $5 and the amount further away was $20. A lot of teams aimed for $20 but it was hard to achieve. The team who won the most money aimed all their bean bags on $5. Kobe explained that sometimes we aim for the biggest amount but the risk of achieving that goal is higher.

After the bean bag game, we learn about NEEDS and WANTS. Some of our students identified needs which are actually wants. This is a great way to reflect on what our needs are and what our wants are. Kobe explained needs are essentials which we need for survival. He also explained that wants are our personal consumption. For example, Playstation 5 is not a need. We don't really need it but we would want it. It is a want and not a need.

Our next activity was spending our income we earned from the bean bag activity. Each group had the money they earned from the activity to spend. There was a sheet of activities with costs and we had to decide what we were going to spend our money on and how much we would save. It was a great discussion to have about what we really needed and what we could do without.

After morning tea, we learnt about Lender and Borrower. A lender is someone who lends something to another person. A borrower is the person asking for something. Frank taught us about being a responsible borrower and being wise as a lender. We have to choose who we lend our belongings to. Do we trust them to return our belongings? How valuable is the item to us? We finished off our lesson with role plays about borrowing and lending.
