Lockdown. A great opportunity for parents to participate in their children's learning.

I saw this blog post on Kalolaine's blog this morning. I noticed the Samoan note at the end of the post. Thank you Mrs Tukuafu for your kind words and also encouraging all your children to continue with their learning during the lockdown.

Kindest regards
Mrs Tofa

Family in lockdown

LOCKDOWN : Lockdown to me its all about family time. We are grateful to have lockdown so we can spend more time with each other. Sometimes its hard for us to get family time due to work and school and church activity.

On this lockdown what I enjoy the most is that I can spend more time with my mum and dad and my uncle and all my siblings.

On the lockdown, my mum already has a schedule for us everyday. At 8am, our mum wakes up all to wash our face and brush our teeth. After that our breakfast is ready. Once our breakfast is done by 9.30 that is when our teacher starts our hangouts, my older brother's tutors is on as well.

My mum will do our younger sister and brother some numbers and the alphabet. I love our family time during this lockdown. Im so grateful for the technology we are still able to do our school stuff.

Holiday learning task. Draw an illustration to describe how you feel about being on lockdown.

Richie enjoys using Google Draw to draw his illustrations. This is another one he did for one of his holiday learning activities. Great one Richie. How is that DLO on how to draw these illustrations coming along?

We love viewing and leaving comments on your blogs.

In Room 7, we set up a challenge for each student to post 20 blog comments on different blog posts. The blogs included our class blogs, school blogs and also our Tuhi Mai, Tuhi Atu buddy classes. This week we achieved 230 comments. Well done Room 7. Let's see what number we achieve next week.

Learning from home in Hangouts

Today, Room 7 and Mrs Tofa had their first hangout. It was a great opportunity to see the students who were able to join the hangout. The next four weeks while New Zealand is on lockdown, Room 7 will have hangouts with Mrs Tofa to discuss learning activities and share ideas for learning.

Every evening, Mrs Tofa puts up a reminder video to discuss what will be discussed in the hangouts the next day. The links to the learning activities are also on the class site under home learning.

Come on Room 7, join in our class hangouts.

Victoria has been finding factors of numbers and also meanings to terminologies in Maths. Here are her slides to share her learning.

A fun day of cricket

Today, 27 students from Glenbrae School travelled to the Colin Maiden Park to participate in the Tamaki Cluster Cricket day.

We had one year 7&8 girls team, one year 7&8 boys team and one year 5&6 boys team. All teams played really well today and everyone tried their best. Some students were not confident with their skills but as the day carried on they got better and better.

Super proud of you all.

Richie, Tupou and Aisea created this DLO to teach others about Coronavirus.

Another Nellie the elephant narrative but this one was written by Richie with a different perspective on the story. Great read. Again this was from a picture as a prompt.

It was a cold and mysterious night of training. We were just preparing for the big circus show we were about to perform in front of the biggest circus crowd in years. I’ve never performed in a crowd with over 65 people but tomorrow night will be my time to shine.

After training, we were told to pack our things because right after the circus we would be heading off to America to perform for the president. Soon after we had all fallen asleep we woke up to the smell of flames. We quickly got up and warned the circus master by screaming at the top of our lungs. He came rushing down and opened all our cages. Luckily I packed all my belongings for the trip so I put it on my back and rushed out with my best friend Tigress.

All animals scurried around circus and separated in many ways. I had my bestie by my side and we had food for days but the only problem was that we had no shelter. Minutes turned into hours, hours turned into days and days turned into weeks of searching for a new home.

Then in a distance, we saw some people, so with all my energy, we ran up to them just to find that it was a scarecrow trying to keep some stupid birds away from some food. Where do we go next?

With an image from Probble 365, Soane created this entertaining narrative.

BOOM!!! everything went very loud when the great Nellie the elephant went stomping right into the circus with her four gigantic feet. The act started with two cheeky monkeys juggling sharp knives. Up and down the knives went looking for something to stab, but luckily these monkeys were being one hundred percent careful. The  performance was highly extraordinary, when the mighty Nellie came marching in like she was a furious soldier.

As she was walking in, one of the circus animals which was a tiger, came zooming in with its fire ring. Suddenly Nellie spun around and accidentally whipped the fire ring straight out of the tiger's hand. The fire ring went up into the air flying and flying until it finally touched the circus tent. The tent bursted into bits of flames. Nellie was petrified she didn't know what to do, all she could do was look at all the danger she caused.

A few moments later, Nellie was kicked out of the circus crushing all her hopes of being famous. Nellie was sorry for what she did but she knew she was never going to get her job back. She packed as much stuff as she could and went on searching for a new home for her to rest in.

Emoji Maths

Kue'a had quite a lot of fun creating this Emoji maths slide. Each Emoji represents a number. You have to figure out the numbers. See if you can solve them.

Ali-Jon shares his narrative from the Nellie the Elephant prompt

There was a big and gray elephant named Nellie. Nellie was at the circus performing in front of the people when the monkey holding the fire sticks and balancing on a rope tripped and fell. They just didn’t fall, they fell with the fire sticks and dropped it on the tent.

THEN!

The fire started burning the whole circus.

People were yelling “Ahhh’’. People were scared that they could die or get injured but Nellie ran out as fast as she could. Nellie and her friend Tiger ran with their bags and went off. Her friend got tired so Nellie said ‘’Jump on my back’’. Then her friend replied ‘’Aww thanks’’ then she went asleep.

When Nellie was walking, she was looking around to see if there was a home that she and her friend could stay in. When they went further, Nellie saw another circus that  was a two or three minute walk away.

She woke up her friend and said, ‘’Hey, wake up I see another circus”. She woke up then they walked for three minutes please?”. Then they said ‘’Yes’’ and then they lived happily ever after.

Ezekiel's narrative about Nellie the elephant.

An elephant named Nellie was a performer at a circus, she was enjoying her time there until her home was annihilated by flames of fire.

Therefore, she packed her stuff and her favourite peanuts for the road then she said goodbye   and began her journey to find a new one.

Lonely, afraid and exhausted she gave up. She fell onto the floor sobbing. She lost everything: her home, her friends, everything. But there was a glimmer of green from the distant land that wasn’t touched a bit from the fire. This land cheered her up again, maybe there is hope after all.

Room 7 have just finished reading Boyznbikes by Vince Ford. Here is our collaborative novel review about the book we read as a class.

Ngakiri, Ezekiel, Tupou, Kalo and Richie dig deeper into the effects of Global Warming on our Pacific Islands

Swimming is an essential life skill.

Room 7 have been focussing on backstroke this week. We have a few students who are struggling with the backstroke technique but we are all improving each day.

The swimming pool is lovely and cool escape from the hot sun and the warm classrooms.

Well done everyone for your effort in the pool.

Learning about cells in Genomics

As part of home learning, we had to create a poster with a continuum of the smallest living thing to the biggest. Here is Viliami M's google drawing showing the smallest living thing he researched and the biggest.

Learning about sentence starters

Today in Room 7, we learnt about different ways to start sentences. We watched a video on youtube and then we wrote our own sentences.

These are my two sentence

1. Hurriedly, Room 7 rushed to the hall for assembly.
The first sentence starts with an LY starter.

2. Tom happily skipped to his home after school.
The second sentence starts with the subject then a verb. The subject is Tom and the verb is happily.
